I don’t have a date for my conversion, though I’ve been reading about my blogger buddy Mike Doyle’s conversion on his blog for days. If you are in the process of converting, thinking about converting, or just snooping around because you maybe kinda perhaps want to convert READ HIS POST. Feel free to click around his blog as well for many insightful stories and inspiration. There are so many beautiful stories that literally have me misty eyed and longing for the day that I will emerge from the mikvah.
I like to remind myself, that like a “good” Jew our purpose is to live in the moment, make the present count, and not pine away for the future. I’d be lying if I claimed to be patient. I’m impatient. On the other hand, there are other things on my Jewish checklist that thankfully will occupy my mind as I read through the books that Rabbi L. has been assigning to me as of late.
The first thing on my checklist is Learning Hebrew. Thankfully, my good friend, mentor, and really awesome kick-ass queer convert Rabbi extraordinaire, Rabbi Andrea Myers has agreed to take on the task of being my Hebrew tutor. I’m not going to lie, I’m a little intimidated. Seriously, she’s Ah-Maz-Ing. I’m beyond thrilled that she’s agreed to take me on. I’m floored that she’s agreed to push me hard, and I’m honored that she thinks I’ll make a good rabbi one day. An interview with Rabbi Andrea will be coming soon. In the meantime, like her on Facebook and buy her book. It’s an honest, sometimes hard, always funny look at becoming Jewish.
She’s already assigned my first task. A YouTube video of the Hebrew Alef Bet. With that, I’m on my way to learn Hebrew!
