a gay black woman's discovery of her jewish self

Jewish Community

Posted on: June 20, 2011

I’ve interviewed several extraordinary Jewish people for my blog and for other sites.  In those interviews I like to ask a seemingly simple question.  Define Jewish Community.  I am always pleasantly surprised at the answers I get and wanted to throw it out to my readers.

This week I will be sitting down with two of my favorite people.  Rabbi Andrea Myers and Noah Aronson for interviews.  I cannot wait to chat with them and to share the interviews with you.  In the meantime, readers, define Jewish Community.  Please.

This isn’t an all-inclusive definition by any means, but I feel it’s a decent representation of a large portion of the Jewish community: look up Mein Shtetale by Groyse Metsi’e. It just has that Ashkenazi feel all over it.

Other than that, I have no real words to describe “Jewish Community.” It’s whatever I run into I guess!

Thanks for your contribution, Colleen! I definitely agree that there isn’t one definition-which is why it’s my favorite question to ask.
