Shabbat Post

Shabbat Shalom, ya’ll!

I just got home from work 11PM and lit my Shabbat candles hours after sundown.  I’ll have to blow them out, to avoid a possible fire, and Shabbat has already started but it felt good to come home and light candles in my apartment.  This will be a quick post because it’s Shabbat after all, and I have to work tomorrow early.  I did want to let all of you know about some cool things happening.  As I mentioned in a previous post, I want to start talking to Jews engaged in their Judaism, politically and socially active Jews, Queer Jews, and Jews of Color to not only learn about their Jewish experience but to share their experience with my readers.

Last night I sat down with 3 out of 4 members of the Trans Jewish Band Schmekeland was so wonderfully inspired.  Every time I’m in a room with young Jews or queer Jews I’m blown away not only by who they are, but how much they’re involved in their Judaism.  I’m making some time to sit down with their lead singer and the interview will hopefully be done first week of May.  Please take the time to learn about these four amazing Jewish individuals who make really fun music.

Secondly,  Andrea Myers, a lesbian rabbi and Jew-by-Choice recently wrote a memoir called The Choosing A Rabbi’s Journey from Silent Nights to High Holy Days.  I purchased it today and am already relating to her story on many different levels.  Rabbi Myers’ book signing and reading will be at Rodeph Sholom on May 3rd at 7PM in New York’s Upper West Side.  If you’re a New York Jew, a Queer Jew, a Jew-By-Choice or just you I would encourage you to come and hear her speak.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that she’ll sit down with me to be my second interview for June.  Also in my back pocket are my friend Noah Aronson and a Jewish butcher with big dreams, and that’s all I’ll say about that for now.

Thanks for all of the activity lately on the site!  I promise to get back to all of the recent comments on Sunday at the very latest.
