Some Relief to Seniors in Far Rockaway
Posted on: November 7, 2012
I got the following e-mail today :
A friend of mine forwarded your article
to me this morning because I had been out volunteering guerrilla style out in Rockaway this past weekend. I was at 155 Beach 19th St. a building filled with seniors who are immobile, without running water, heat, power, etc. Everything you noticed I noticed as well. Since Sunday, I have been trying to coordinate efforts to get some running water to that building so that they could flush their toilets while trying to get FDNY and mobile command to evacuate them because… WHY are they even there?! It is unsafe and unsanitary.
So I don’t know if you noticed, but someone posted a comment on your article that said:
URGENT CALL TO ACTION!!__Today starting at 1 :30 pm at Far Rockaway – Russian speakers needed to go from apt to apt to inform people that they can be evacuated tomorrow to a synagogue and a Jewish community center. Need to bring food and water to them. Coordinated by Kings Bay Y and Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope in close collaboration with JASA____Volunteer command post is located at 125 sea…girt blvd (off beach 19th st) far Rockaway NY 11691. Person in charge: Ken Soloway – cell 347-415-3868
if no response – try Daniel Zeltzer at 347-604-0305
try texting instead of calling, as they are overwhelmed w calls- if no response- they are there/ unable to speak – just come to the volunteer command post____Everyone will be asked to make at least 2 trips up and down the stairs
I gave Ken Soloway a call, he said that they are in all of the buildings evacuating the seniors as we speak. He was very rushed because he was dealing with this issue, but I wanted to pass that along to you. Initially I was trying to contact you to update you on my efforts and perhaps combine them, but then I called Ken, and I think at this moment, the safety needs of these seniors are being taken care of. They are on a time crunch due to the weather/storm coming in.
The command post they set up, is literally right on the corner of the street I was on. I am very relieved to know this.
Thank you for your article which pointed me towards Ken, so that I didn’t start doubling up on his efforts.
IF YOU ARE ABLE BODIED-PLEASE CALL KEN AND HELP GET THESE SENIORS TO SAFETY BEFORE THE NEXT STORM!
