a gay black woman's discovery of her jewish self

What’s Inspiring Me Today

Posted on: August 9, 2012

I’m still deep in the throws of new home drama. I spent the whole of yesterday in my apartment while my landlord/plumber worked for 6 hours-no exaggeration-on my pipes. I suppose I should be grateful to have a kitchen sink and bathtub that drains efficiently and quickly rather than standing water, but it was not how I planned to spend my Wednesday.

Despite this little blip, cohabitation has been really amazing. Mir and I are cooking each other delicious and healthy meals each night and it’s starting to feel incredibly comforting to not only wake up but to fall asleep next to the person that I care so deeply for. We’re making plans to host a house warming party in the next few weeks. This will actually be the most Jewish thing I’ve done in a long time-which is strange because my one year anniversary is only a few days away. If I think back to then and now, I can’t help but wonder if I’m the Jew I aimed to be.

So it seems only natural that Gd/fate/whatever should intervene. My favorite Ramandan blog, 30 Mosques 30 Days, posted this video on Facebook today. I’m feeling grateful for the honest reflection and inspired to continue to work on my own personal spiritual and religious practice.
